Our Occupational Therapy Department focuses on the physical and psychological aspects of the illness in relationship to the resident’s ability to perform everyday tasks.

The Occupational Therapy consult begins with a complete assessment of the individual. An individual program is developed according to the resident’s needs and abilities. Areas of treatment frequently include those activities most of us have come to take for granted: eating, dressing, bathing, homemaking, and meal preparation are among the most common skills needing development and adaptation. Therapies include muscle strengthening, eye-hand coordination, and use of adaptive equipment as needed. A regular kitchen area is utilized for reinforcement of safe techniques in meal preparation.
During the discharge phase, a therapist will visit the home of the resident being discharged. Suggestions and environmental adaptations can be discussed and implemented, enabling each resident to return home as early as possible.

Conditions which may require splints include arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, stroke, advancing Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s Disease. Residents requiring splints will be pleased to know our therapy department molds each one individually. While ready-made splints are available, many residents find custom-molded splints to be more comfortable.

Individuals requiring assistance in maintaining proper body alignment also benefit from our Occupational Therapists. Individual attention is given to the comfort and proper positioning of all of our residents.
